As at 2am Monday morning 5th April 2021 some gunmen men identified as IPOB attacked the police headquarters in the capital city of Owerri, Imo state.
Report from the police said they were outnumbered as the gunmen came in numbers with such as General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), as this was done to gain access into the police armory to get more weapons and during the cause of this attacked over one thousand inmate was said to have escaped and are currently at large with one few re-arrest made.
The Inspector-General of Police IGP Mohammed Adamu has issued a statement that a special investigation team will be set up to bring those involved to justice.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma also said that this is a challenge on the security of his state and called on the police, Airforce, Army and Navy to opt every security measure to ensure such incidence doesn't occur again.
